One-Bag-A-Week meets the Food Recovery Challenge

by Amy on July 3, 2012

The EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge asks, “How much of your food and money are you literally throwing away?”.  Part of the EPA’s Sustainable Materials Management Program, the Food Recovery Challenge asks participants to reduce as much of their food waste as possible — saving money, helping communities, and protecting the environment.

Although the program is geared toward companies, the food recovery triangle is a great guide for homeowners and small business owners to help reduce waste and meet the rigors of the One-Bag-A-Week Challenge!

Source Reduction – Create your own farm or buy fresh and local in quantities that meet your short term needs.

Feed Hungry People – Glean extra produce from your farm and donate it to your local food cupboard.

Feed Animals – Have a farmer nearby? Or do you keep chickens yourself? Vegetables and fruits are gobbled up by farm animals.

Composting – Don’t scrape that plate into the trash – scrape leftovers into your compost bin – not meat but most everything else – and then use that rich, nutrient rich compost in your garden and in your farm for healthier plants.
